Watch Phish as they explor larger venue sounds in early years

In the Summer of 1992 Phish opened up a series of shows for Santana. There's a famous story about Trey going surfing with Santana where the legendary guitar player gives Trey some pointers about not only playing guitar but living his life. I'm sure it included some slick analogy about surfing and life.

But what this opportunity did for the band was give them an early glimpse at life on the big stage. Phish on their own at this point in time were still playing theatres and clubs so getting to play on stages such as Shoreline Amphithre in Mt. View, California at this time was a huge step in size. This obviously leads to differences in how a band will sound and also means the band must adjust to how their sound will expand across the larger venue.

Without wasting any time, they launch in to a fiery Chalk Dust Torture. Pretty typical version but the nice thing about old footage is you can see how giddy they are playing up on that stage. The YEM has some fun Oye Como Va quotes, which was also pretty typical given who they were opening for, and also some Under Pressure teases.

In general, watch this video not so much for the amazing jams but rather the fun early footage of a band priming themselves for the eventual move to the big stage of their own.
