Set 1: Dinner and a Movie, AC/DC Bag, Maze, Mound, Funky Bitch, Bathtub Gin, Wilson, Water in the Sky, Boogie on Reggae Women
Dinner and a Movie then AC/DC Bag to open a show is saying something. It says, this is our 30 year anniversary kids.
Trey rocking the Page McConnnell t-shirt. Respect.
Coming out strong as Trey bleeds his final Bag note into the beginning of Maze! Let the McConnell / Trey jam off commence. Some choice chords from Trey to comp Page's organ throwdown. Fantastic climatic peak from Trey. Well played sir.
Mound is finding its way into the regular rotation. No complaints here. It seems like this tour that they are playing a lot of songs from Rift and Hoist. Be curious to see a breakout - someone want to crunch those numbers? As Scott Bernstein points out, they have played Mound in 2013 as many times as they played it between 1997 and 2010.
Mound is a great song but definitely one where my mind can wonder and forget what is going on. Not too far off I guess from the middle segment where it goes all haywire. But a really cool song that is 100% Phish.
A Funky Bitch out of Mound keeps the old school vibe going and then Bathtub Gin. This is Phish Hitsville. Whoops, a bit too early there Trey with the lyric entry. Page takes advantage by doing a 360 of his gear and crashing the boards before they drop into the lyrics.
This Gin had a slow start but when the jam started to hit it's stride it rolled real fast and peaked nicely.
The hits just keep coming. The crowd favorite, Wilson, lays his "hate" on the scene.
I'm suprised they haven't played Water in the Sky more often this tour. Only its 3rd time out but could have been played at 90% of this tour and it would have been appropriate.
Boogie on Reggae Women is usually a second set slot but with the way this show is going, anything goes. The rain sure was coming down during this one as the crew covered up as much of the bands gear as possible.
The livephish.com stream was having some troubles tonight. Mine cut out just as Boogie was getting going and when it come back the jam segued right into Antelope, which then cut short due to the rain. Trey made sure we all knew it wasn't his idea. Can't imagine what they must feel like each time they have to cut off their playing for the fans that pay good money to come watch them play.
Now, the question is what is the over/under on the 2nd set opening with Antelope?
Set 2 coming soon... (hopefully)
Energy -> Ghost -> Lizards, Harpua, Antelope
E: Character Zerio
Well, the stream didn't resurface until Lizards so we missed Energy and Ghost. Sounded like Energy was once again taken for a spin but the Ghost that followed must not have had too much juice as it segued into Lizards pretty quickly.
Some flubs from Trey during the Lizards composed section. But all is good. Not the biggest LIzards fan any way. But Harpua, now there's a jam. Many folks calling this one. Story gonna most likely be monsoon related.
Well, my monsoon guess was wrong. They instead brought up actors pretening to be fans who said they were telling the whole Harpua story wrong all these years. Their version was pretty lame and seems like even the band thought this prank was pretty bad so instead they get Gordon to tell the story. Gordon, while soft spoken, sure knows how to tell a story (see Doniac Schvice archives).
And there's the Antelope. Like most of their classics (Slave, Harry, etc.), they have been absolutely killing this tune this tour. Certainly doesn't beat Darlings version or SPAC's Meatelope, but a raging Antelope nonetheless.
A five song set. While I love Harpua as much as the next guy, the story time does take away from jam time. But that Mike's story sure was special.
Character Zero is a perfect encore choice for any night, but especially this up and down tour stop. While some may say that this was just a bad year all around for weather, my wife and I went out to Chicago last year around this same time for Pitchfork Festival and the same ordeal with weather took place. It is the midwest and they do get some nasty storms.
Looking forward to hearing the Energy -> Ghost section as it's tough to give a thorough review of this second set without that opener. But all in all, a fun set with classic Phish antics.
