Steve Gunn use to be a guitarist with Kurt Vile's band, The Violators. He grew up in Landsdowne, PA, just outside of Philly where he looked up to guitarist virtuoso, Jack Rose. Like Jack, Steve's material is mostly geared towards the instrumental guitar picking lover. But his latest album called Way Out Weather (release date: October 7th), sounds like it may include a bit more straightforward tunes.
For example, check out the track "Milly's Garden"
Starts out with a very summery guitar riff. Sounds like something off of a Girls or Real Estate album. There's also some slide guitar, giving it a southern rock / Allman Brothers vibe. Steve's singing style is very laid back, adding to the overall chill out vide of the tune. As the song carries on we enter a drone jam that Steve has perfected. This jam leads us back into the chorus for a well structured, straightforward hit track.
While it may be an October releasse, kudos to Steve and his label, Paradise of Bachelors, for releassing this gem here in the summer as it fits the vibe perfectly.
