Gorge Night #1 - Phish Couch Tour Stream Review

After a bit of a breather, Phish returns to the live stage tonight at The Gorge in Quincy, WA. A long standing venue that has been privy to many a quality show, including home to one of the best jams of this era - Rock n Roll from 8/5/11

We'll be staying up late over here in the East Coast to stream the show and provide some live stream feedback on what we're hearing from the couch.

Set 1: AC/DC Bag -> Timber Ho, Wolfman's Brother, Funky Bitch, Happy Birthday (Chris Kuroda's b-day), Wilson, Possum, Tube, Secret Smile, McGrupp, Ballad Curtis of Loew, SOAM

A gorgeous day at The Gorge means you gotta wear shades if you are a man wearing a moomoo to the dance party. Some fine Type 1 licks from Trey during this bag. The Page/Trey interplay continues to be on full display in this bag.

Oh lord. Timber (Jerry) comes out for a spin early. This show has mustard to start.

No wasting time for Page getting to the Clav in this Wolfman's. Straight out of the funk and into Trey rock city. Seems to be the norm for Wolfman's these days. Serious peakage. They are having fun with that recipe for that song and I can't argue.

They've been coming out hot in these first sets. For the past couple of years, the Page solo in Funkty Bitch has been just down right dirty. Always gets the crowd's fists pumping. Nice breakdown by Trey and the band in this one while Page whales on his organ.

Ahhh, isn't that sweet. A little Happy Birthday for Chris Kuroda.

Then some Rolling Stone  "Satisfactoin" teases from Gordon as a nod to Mick's 70th b-day. Trey runs and grabs a Russell Wilson jersey and shows "Wilson" on the back of the shirt to the crowd and what do ya know, they play Wilson. That's Phish for ya.

While I like the idea, Trey, that chant is a bit of a taunt then it is a rally chant.

Possum, Chalk Dust and Backwards Down the Number Line are the top 3 mots played songs of this tour.

TUBE!!! The punch that they can pack in just over 6 minutes is impressive.

Interesting back catalog selectoin off of Undermind with Secret Smile. Only 8th time played since 2003. Biggest bust out of the tour so far, if you don't count the Happy Birthday song. A pretty song and a nice cool down to this rocking set so far.

MCGRUPP!!!! The version from Deer Creek last year has one of the better Page solos. Lets see how this one fairs. Either way, love this song.  And yup, Page's solo is on fire with this song.

Some Skynyrd for all those classic rockers out there.

So, SOAM has taken on some interesting shapes of late. From the 18 minute long SPAC excursion to the precise yet dissonant version from MPP.  This version, however, is a bit more classic sounding then the other two, which is a good thing.

End set and what a set it was. Slowling down only really once with a bustout in Secret Smile, this set was full of juice that should only lead to extrodinary things in the second set.

Set 2: Crosseyed > Twist > Steam > Waves > 20 Yrs. Later > Mango Song, Bug > Bowie, Rocky Top, Character Zero (with moon jam)

E: Harry Hood, Fire

We had some streaming poblems thorughout CnP, which was a bummer given it sounded like it was going into some interesting spaces. We finally got everything running smoothly and Twist was well on its way.

Similar to the PNC show where they through in Rocky Top at the tail end just when everyone thought the night was over and then a rocking closer only instead of Cavern they went with Zero here at the Gorge. As CK5 brought the lights down, the moon / howling jam soon started sounding like a group orgy. If you are like @fluffhead67, then you needed a cigarrette after that love fest
