Phish has decided to make their final show of the summer tour before the annual throwdown in Commerce City, Colorado (AKA Dick's) a free live webcast. It's fun to write about the show in the moment, especially from ones couch. Much like being at the show, you may hear things differently tnen when you play it back and have more time to critique the nuiances of the jams. So to celebrate this fantastic tour and the free webcast, it's a play by play session tonight here at phishfork.
Encore Park has been a regular stop for the boys since their return in 2009 having played every summer since 2010 except for 2012. All told this will be their 7th gig at this Georgia venue. Some memorable moments were the 4th of July show in 2010 where they threw down a Harpua with a blistering version of the Nine Inch Nails song, "Killing In The Name", a wild weather show where they cut off the 1st set mid-Mound then preceded to play where they left out in that Mound for set two in 2012 and last year's opener at the venue showcased a tightly compacted Type 11 Chalk Dust.
It won't be too much of a surprise if we get another type II CDT tonight given how that song has played out this tour. But there's no questioning the eventually drop of "Fuego". One can only imagine if they'll take it for a ride or keep it within the boundaries of the song. Will the show in general be more of a "festival type set" as Rory over at OPT recently discussed about the past two nights. Or will they leave us with our jaws on the floor and forced to count down the days till Dick's?

1st Set: My Soul, Bathtub Gin, 555, Pebbles and Marbles, The Line, Vultures, Fast Enough For You, Back on the Train, Taste, Gumbo, Halfway to the Moon, Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan,
Great openers. Both smoking and played really tight. The Gin had Trey flexing his fingers and giving them a real work out, which is always a good sign for the rest of the night.
555 seems like it's comfortable being a first set energy booster. Not that this set needed up till this point. Guessing a cool down next.
Well, not quite a cool down all though it's got a chill start.
Set rounding out nicley with 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. I prefer my 'Lines' in the first set.
Vultures! Brings back memories of 99/00 tours.
FEFY is such a great ballad. I find myself going between If I Could, FEFY, Wading as my top 3. Interesting to see it slotted in the first set as it's usually a 2nd set cool down after some epic jamming. But hey, set placement and this tour are completely up in the air.
BOTT saw Trey rocking some cool octave riffs as he often likes to do with the lead up to his solo. Standard ripping BOTT. So far a ripping set but nothing outside the box.
Taste keeps the set rocking n rolling but per par in this era, the song doesn't quite pop like it use to. Still a classic and still a great tune to catch.
Cool little ska riffing before the break down in Gumbo. And instead of Trey's usual guitar solo he keeps the riffing going! And Page of course jumps on his clav! This is fun. Gordon is getting in on some of the fun with his meatball bass. Well, that was enjoyable. First signs of exploration and it couldn't have been via a better song.
Halfway makes the 3rd Fuego, which is about the norm this tour. Stealing Time is such a smoking tune. Short but sweet. Really enjoyed it at the Mann this year. And this Suzy had some fun Stealing Time teases from Trey. They sure love their Teases this tour. Definite sign of feeling comfortable up there together. I think Page may have been close to killing his keys in that Suzy solo. A fun set overall with no crazy left turns besides a Gumbo that went type II finally, even if it was brief.
2nd Set: Chalk Dust > Scents and Subtle Sounds > Twist > Fuego > The Wedge > Light > Hood > First Tube
Holy smokes, this CDT had some real twists and turns. Trey hit some chord in a trippy way and it led them down a spacey path before hitting gloryville. And then this segue into Scents was flawless. A definite bustout having not been played for 109 shows.
Twist baby. A little electric drill action from Gordon at the start. Slow, slinky jam led by Fish and Trey. A perfect move from the lil pumpkin to the keys by Page as they head into the peak and finale.
And here's that Fuego. Just out of the gate you can tell this Fuego is set to burn baby, burn. Crowd really digging and singing along. A little timing mishap coming out of the bridge jam but that's easy to look past given they are having fun with it. Jam never strays from the pocket but still a great song and I think it's safe to say it's a welcome addition to the jam vehicle.
So The Wedge has certainly gotten a lot of love this summer, and I ain't complaining. But lets see if they can dash the same amount of treatment as they did in Chicago on this late 2nd set version. Oh well. Still being played with force this tour.
Light to most likely bring back some exploration. Yup, here's the exploration. Trey with some serious jazzy chords that leak into some spacey. Have to think a 2001 is looming. Or could be just some dark funk. Gordon simply slaughtering this jam.
Fun with Hood intro as Trey chuckles and then crowd erupts mid glow stick throws as they enter the opening "Harry...Hood" section. Fitting way to end this set given it started with Hood's arch nemsis in terms of his competition for jam of tour. And Gordon is simply killing with an awesome bass solo layered over Trey. The interplay on display here is off the charts. After some fun with Trey jamming with each member, the start bringing it back to the slow build of Hood. Gordon begins taking them towards the home stretch but Trey has other plans in mind with a bit of a break down jam, which is the same thing he did during Great Woods only this riff he is pulling off started that jam whereas this is coming towards the end. A great peak per usual these days and yet another fantastic Hood in the books.
First Tube should most likely cap off a very, very good night and set in general. But wow. This 1st Tube is off the map type good. Trey going nuts with his dancing on the stage. I don't think he's gone this bonkers even during Tweezer Reprise. Absolutley loving this moment right now. End set and fans throw flowers. Band comes to front of stage together to bow and you can tell emotions are flying.
Encore: Fluffhead
Not much else I have to say other then a pretty flawless Fluffhead without nary a flub and a peak to send fivers up your spine. I'm sure they too are feeling bummed about having to wait 3 weeks before playing again but if Dick's is anything like this tour, Colorado is in for a real treat.
